Mary Ann Cooper
Short Biography: Mary Ann Cooper, MD is the only physician elected to be a Fellow in the American Meteorological Society. In addition, she received an AMS Special Award “for outstanding work on the medical effects of lightning which has enhanced the treatment of lightning strike victims and revolutionized lightning safety worldwide.” Dr. Cooper is a practicing emergency physician at the University of Illinois Hospital as well as an advisor and teacher of medical students and residents and senior faculty member on university and medical school committees. Her areas of interest include the physiological aspects of lightning injuries, treatment, and injury prevention. She is active in fostering public understanding and recognition of the injury by participating in documentaries and media interviews, networking inquirers, lightning victims and their families, and collaborating with lightning specialists and researchers (meteorologists, physicists, engineers, etc.) around the world to encourage injury prevention.More About Mary Ann Cooper
